Next time you walk down an older sidewalk, stop for a moment and look down. You will likely notice many cracks and discolorations in the sidewalk that are quite interesting and intricate if you take the time to look at them. They are not saying or expressing anything to anyone. You may think they are telling you that the sidewalk is old, that it needs to be replaced, or any number of other things. But these would simply be imposed interpretations of their meaning, when in fact they express nothing; they just are. The cracks will still be there  not expressing anything to anyone when you walk away. The cracks in the sidewalk are beautiful. Not in that they are expressing beauty or demanding attention, but simply that they are beautiful in their existence.

Cracks In The Sidewalk was originally composed for two marimbas and cello, and was premiered by Matt Sharrock, Karli Viña (Mason at the time), and Jennifer Bewerse at The Boston Conservatory on October 21, 2010. It was reworked for viola or cello, vibraphone, and marimba in 2019.
