I began composing A Bergman Afternoon with the idea of an existential bittersweet feeling and the words veneer and hazy in mind. I also thought about the feeling we often get in slightly awkward social situations, and how it is hard to describe with words. To no avail, I tried to come up with a title that would somehow abstractly suggest a hazy veneer of bittersweet melancholy. Being a huge fan of director Ingmar Bergman, I recently purchased several of his classic films and had been talking about him with various friends. Not long after completing the piece, it came to me: Bergman’s overall aesthetic perfectly describes the abstract and complex feeling I was trying to describe with too many words!

A Bergman Afternoon was composed in three weeks and a day in December, 2014 from the 9th through the 31st, and was written for Marti Epstein and Nicole Parks.
